Quick Facts

Majors vs. Career Paths
Your major does not lock you into a single career forever. Most career paths zigzag rather than follow a straight line. We focus on helping you build adaptable skills and real-world experience so you graduate with a flexible toolkit. You'll be fully prepared to pivot confidently whenever your goals or the job market change.
-
Choosing Your Major
Your major is just one part of your story. Degrees open doors, but your actual skills are what get you hired. That's why a History major can pivot into tech project management, and a Biology major can launch a sustainable fashion startup. Choose something you genuinely care about, and use UCR to build a versatile skill set that works in any industry.
-
Transfer-Selecting Majors
Transfer-selecting majors have specific prerequisite courses and GPA requirements that must be completed before you transfer to UCR. Because many UCR majors are selective, be sure to plan ahead to meet these criteria. Visit Getting Into a Selective Major to learn exactly what you need for your intended major.
-
Undeclared Majors
It’s okay if you do not have your path figured out on day one. You’re not behind, just strategic, which could save you time and money in the long run. UCR offers two Undeclared programs to help first-year students find their best fit: Humanities and Science. You can take general education and introductory courses while working closely with advisors to choose and officially declare your major in the future.
-
Double Majors
Double majoring is a great way to combine your passions and stand out to employers. Balancing two programs does take strong time management, but it's completely doable across most of our colleges and schools. To get started, enroll in your primary major and connect with your academic advisor. Together, you will map out a clear roadmap to track your quarters, manage your electives, and graduate on time.
-
Minors
Customize your degree with a minor. You can build specialized skills or explore a passion in just 5–7 classes, bypassing the heavy workload of a double major. Mix and match your interests to stand out to employers, who routinely pay a premium for graduates who understand two distinct fields.
-
Skills and Experiences That Employers Want
Employers care more about what you can actually do than the title printed on your diploma. They look for graduates who can quickly adapt to new tech, use data to solve problems, and work well with a team. That's why getting real-world proof on your resume matters. At UCR, you’ll get access to hands-on experiences, such as research, internships, and campus leadership roles starting in your very first year.
