Umoja (Kiswahili for “unity”) is dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of students with a focus on the African Diaspora. Umoja provides transfer students throughout California with the knowledge, tools and support needed to increase their academic success.

Over 60 California Community Colleges have Umoja chapters on their campuses; UC Riverside is the first University of California campus to have an Umoja chapter. Umoja at UCR is about getting students to that next level by offering:

  • Job opportunities

Umoja at UCR also hosts events throughout the year for transfer students:

  • R’Umoja Day, a one-day event for students interested in transferring to UCR held in February.
  • Umoja Southern California Regional Symposium, a one-day program for Umoja students, educators and mentors held in April.
  • Umoja Student Leadership Summit, a three-day conference for Umoja student leaders and educators held in August.

Cross Enrollment

You can start your UC Riverside education before you transfer. Cross enrollment lets you take UCR classes while still attending a California Community College or California State University, and you’ll pay only $46 per unit.*


You must:

  • Be a California resident.
  • Have completed at least one term as a matriculated student at your home campus.
  • Be enrolled for at least 6 units at your home campus.
  • Have a 2.0 GPA or higher at your home campus.
  • Meet the prerequisites for the UCR class you want to take.
